# What does a worn shoulder joint feel like?

*Shoulder Pain Treatment Phoenix — A Plain Guide to Joint Wear*

> A plain shoulder arthritis treatment Phoenix guide to soreness, stiffness, x-rays and a shoulder visit.

Notice whether turning your arm keeps getting harder. Joint wear often causes a deep ache and steady stiffness. Your shoulder may grind and lose motion slowly. Reaching behind you can feel like turning a tight jar lid.

A sore tendon often hurts during one certain lift instead.

## How is joint wear different from a tendon problem?

The shoulder has a ball, a shallow socket and nearby tendons. Joint wear can make the ball and socket stiff in several directions. A tendon problem often hurts during lifting and may weaken your arm. The two problems aren't always separate.

Your doctor won't use soreness alone to tell them apart.

## What can an x-ray tell me?

Worn cushioning can make the gap between shoulder bones look narrower on an x-ray. Extra bumps of bone are called bone spurs. Neither finding measures your soreness or shows which chores have become hard. Your doctor compares the x-ray with your sleep, motion and strength.

QC Kinetix won't discuss biologic therapies, meaning nonsurgical choices made with your blood, before that check. One choice is platelet-rich plasma, a portion separated from your blood so it contains more platelets. The clinician uses the prepared portion in your shoulder to try to ease soreness.

## What happens when someone examines my shoulder?

First, explain how the soreness started and which tasks became hard. The clinician watches you raise and turn both arms. The exam checks strength, your neck and feeling in your hand. An x-ray won't help unless the result could change your care. The clinician also compares your sore arm with your other arm.

Bring old reports, but explain what your shoulder can't do now. Mention any fall, swelling, numbness or sudden loss of strength.

1. In a nationally representative Finnish population sample of 602 adults aged 41-76 who had bilateral 3-Tesla shoulder MRI regardless of symptoms, rotator cuff abnormalities were found in 98.7% of participants (25% tendinopathy, 62% partial-thickness tear, 11% full-thickness tear). Abnormalities were present in 96% of ASYMPTOMATIC shoulders. Only full-thickness tears were more common in symptomatic shoulders, and that difference all but disappeared after adjustment (absolute difference 0.8%, 95% CI -3.4% to 6.0%).

2. A JBJS review of orthobiologics for glenohumeral osteoarthritis notes the glenohumeral joint ranks third after knee and hip for osteoarthritis, that standard non-surgical options have shown only moderate and short-term effectiveness, and that despite promising early results for PRP and cell therapies, ADDITIONAL STUDIES are needed before definitive conclusions can be drawn.

A current-concepts review of non-operative management of shoulder osteoarthritis states plainly that biologics such as PRP, bone marrow aspirate concentrate and mesenchymal stem cells 'are helpful in decreasing shoulder pain but neither stopping the progression nor improving OA', and that first-line care is physical therapy with NSAIDs.
